There isn't a mascara or blush anywhere in the world that deserves this kind of praise, but we guess it helps sell lots of product. "Be your own artist" and "make life simple" are catchphrases she uses throughout her product demonstrations, much to the delight of her models and the customers who call in to profess their love and adoration for Geller's products. Her goal is to make the process of becoming your own makeup artist seem easy and nearly effortless, and her products are designed to support this objective. Watching her on QVC, you get the feeling she's the friendly next door neighbor who, upon trying your spaghetti sauce for the first time, comments, in her own inimitable but non-offensive way, that "it needs more oregano," and then proceeds to add it. We have no doubt that some of the curiosity about these products has to do with Geller's own enthusiasm for them. (By the way, Geller sells most of the same products on QVC, though they're often in pre-selected "value" kits.) Regrettably, it took me only a few minutes to realize that, like so many other cosmetic lines, glitz and enthusiasm can go a long way toward making much ado about mostly average and overpriced products. No matter: They all want to know if Geller's products deliver the goods and are a cut above the rest.Īs we approached the attractively laid out displays at Sephora we were hoping to find exciting products that were indeed a notch above the rest. Geller's line also has rolled out to several Sephora stores, a business development that has brought in droves of questions from women who don't watch QVC or shop its Web site. Laura Geller is the namesake line of a New York City makeup artist who appears regularly on QVC, where her line stirs intense curiosityat least based on the number of requests we routinely receive to review it.
LAURA GELLER SPACKLE FACE PRIMER SKIN
Weaknesses: Only one foundation (sold at Sephora Geller has a hodgepodge of others that come and go on QVC) no foundations, concealers, or powder shades for dark skin tones contour powder is way too shiny several average powder eyeshadows disappointing long-wearing lip paint incomplete and often not well-made assortment of brushes the daytime moisturizer and lip scrub contain needless irritants claims that products do not contain parabens or mineral oil, but they do. Strengths: Liquid foundation and concealer lots of products to add shine to skin good selection of pressed powders the cream and liquid blush enviable lip gloss the sugar-themed eyeshadows great brow tint one remarkable mascara original Spackle. It’s nice that this contains aloe and a peptide, but with a bit more to offer skin in terms of antioxidants and skin-restoring ingredients this primer (which, again, feels much more like a moisturizer) would rank among the best however, what you get now isn’t a far cry from excellent, so it’s worth checking out, especially if you haven’t had good luck with silicone-heavy primers this one omits silicones. The aforementioned cupuacu seed butter isn’t a rich source of vitamins, and otherwise this only contains a tiny amount of tocopheryl acetate, a form of vitamin E.
The tube packaging mentioned above is opaque, so it does a good job keeping the light- and air-sensitive ingredients stable during use, which includes an interesting probiotic ferment ( Lactobacillus bulgaricus) known to soothe skin and reduce redness.Īs for remaining claims of significance, this primer isn’t exactly vitamin-rich. Otherwise, this isn’t very primer-like although its finish helps makeup go on better, just like applying a non-greasy moisturizer first would. Indeed, it works well under makeup (but you can find this ingredient in facial moisturizers, too).ĭoes this help makeup last longer? It can, if what you’d normally apply a moisturizer with a slippery or greasy finish. We like that this contains the ultra-replenishing cupuacu seed butter, listed by its Latin name of Theobroma grandiflorum, because it has the somewhat unique ability to substantially hydrate without feeling thick, greasy, or occlusive on skin. This tube-dispensed primer’s texture is its best trait, because it feels delicate and seems to float over skin, providing non-greasy moisture that leaves skin feeling soft and hydrated without a shiny finish. Its smooth, semi-dry (meaning not moist or “wet” to the touch) finish enhances makeup application, but ultimately not any better than similarly-textured moisturizers. Laura Gellar’s Spackle Hydrating Moisturizing Under Makeup Primer doesn’t feel much like a standard primer it feels and acts like a lightweight creamy moisturizer best for normal to dry skin.
